Destination wedding in West Maui at the Steeple House

An Intimate Steeple House Wedding is a beautiful option for a Hawaiian Wedding if you want to celebrate with close family & friends. This Maui Wedding Photography was made even more special because I photographed it for an old friend.

Mackenzie & Stephen’s story began with flying, but for me, this story goes a lot further back! 30 years ago, my own Mom & Dad eloped at Sedona. It wasn’t their first choice, but my Dad was in flight school and they found out he’d be in training on the day of their wedding. So, they grabbed two of their closest friends and headed to Arizona, where they had a beautiful ceremony. They even borrowed their friend’s wedding rings because they hadn’t had time to get their own. Those friends are Mackenzie’s parents!

A few years after my parent’s elopement, Mackenzie & I were born, and of course we were fast friends. As happens though, I moved to Idaho and we fell out of touch. 15 years later, thanks to Facebook, we reconnected over our love of travelling and spontaneous adventure. I still had flight benefits because my Dad was (still is!) a pilot, and Mackenzie had them because she’d become a pilot herself. So, when I found myself with a week off my university job, I messaged Mackenzie to see if she wanted to go to Costa Rica together the next morning. She said yes and we reunited with a really fun week exploring together.

When Mackenzie met Stephen, a few years later, I couldn’t have been happier for her. Stephen is a really great guy – he’s super sweet, super sensitive and really kind. Mackenzie always told me that when they got engaged, she wanted me to take her engagement photos and photograph the wedding. It was so amazing for that dream to come true! First, I photographed their engagement session on an airport runway and in the California Redwoods. Next up, their incredible Intimate Steeple House Wedding in Maui.

Intimate Steeple House Wedding

Hawaii is a really special place to Mackenzie & Stephen, both separately and now together, so they were sure that’s where they wanted to host their wedding. Even after the pandemic got in the way of their plans, with their original wedding date set for April 10, 2020, they held out to have their dream wedding. When the day arrived, they were both so full of joy and it was just a really special day – despite all the delays!

They had quite a few people fly out for the wedding, and they wanted to enjoy time with their guests as well as have an amazing time together. Their venue, the Steeple House at Kapalua, was the perfect location for this as they could get ready, have their ceremony and party with loved ones into the night all at the one venue. They had a super fun tiki bar set up for cocktail hour with these great pineapple drinks, and had beautiful floral art throughout the venue. We even managed to duck down to the beach for a sunset Maui Wedding Photography session and a moment alone for Mackenzie & Stephen.

Part of what made their Intimate Steeple House Wedding so perfect was that they could enjoy every part of the day there. Steeple House is located just above Ironwoods Beach, and it’s an easy 5-minute walk down to the beach. This meant it was easy for us to head out and take some beautiful wedding portraits without interrupting the wedding festivities or being away from guests for a long time.

Of course, we didn’t just leave it at that though! We also went out the next day for an incredible adventure session around Maui, which I can’t wait to share with you next week!
