Andrew and Katie traveled from Manhattan to celebrate their wedding day in one of their favorite places: Acadia National Park. As avid runners, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts who have even completed the New York Marathon together (what!), they wanted a wedding day that reflected who they are. Rather than choosing between adventure and family, they built a day that included both!

From a pre-sunrise hike on Beehive Trail to a private boat tour around Mount Desert Island and a cozy reception in Bar Harbor, their October small wedding was filled with intentional moments, incredible scenery, and plenty of time spent with the people they love most.

Why Andrew and Katie Chose an Acadia National Park Small Wedding in October

When planning their wedding, Andrew and Katie knew they wanted their vows to be at the center of the day. Sharing that moment with family and friends was incredibly important to them, but they also wanted time alone together and opportunities to experience Acadia National Park in a meaningful way.

October offered everything they were hoping for: colorful fall foliage, cooler hiking temperatures, and the opportunity to showcase the beauty of coastal Maine to their loved ones who traveled in from around the country.

By choosing a full-day wedding experience, they didn't have to sacrifice any part of their vision. They could have adventure, family time, stunning scenery, and a relaxed celebration all in one day.

Sunrise Adventure on Beehive Trail

The day began well before sunrise. Andrew and Katie met me in the dark and set off on Beehive Trail, one of the most iconic hikes in Acadia National Park. Hiking before dawn allowed us to reach the overlook before anyone else arrived. If you know this trail, complete with the rungs and ladders, this is no small feat! It’s a good way to get adrenaline pumping that early in the morning!

At the summit, they shared coffee while watching the first light spill across the eastern side of Mount Desert Island. They exchanged gifts, soaked in the quiet morning together, and enjoyed one of the most peaceful moments of the entire day.

As active people who love challenging themselves outdoors, starting their wedding day with a sunrise hike felt completely authentic to who they are.

Getting Ready at Harborside Hotel in Bar Harbor

After returning from Beehive Trail, we headed back to the Harborside Hotel in Bar Harbor for the getting ready portion of the day.

While I photographed wedding details, Katie spent time with her mom and sister as everyone prepared for the ceremony. One of the sweetest parts of the morning was watching her sister, who also happens to be a hairstylist, do her hair. Those personal touches often become some of the most meaningful memories from a wedding day.

The relaxed atmosphere gave everyone time to settle in before heading into the celebration.

An Small Wedding Ceremony at Otter Point

For their ceremony, Andrew and Katie chose Otter Point, one of the most beautiful ceremony locations in Acadia National Park.

Surrounded by their closest family and friends, they exchanged vows overlooking the dramatic coastline. Making the ceremony even more personal, two of their best friends officiated the wedding together!

October weather in Acadia can be unpredictable, and the coastline was particularly windy and chilly that day. While the ceremony itself was beautiful, we decided to pivot to a more sheltered forest location afterward for family portraits.

One of the benefits of planning a small wedding in Acadia National Park is the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions while still creating a meaningful experience.

After leaving Otter Point, we found a forested area that provided protection from the wind and showcased some of Acadia's beautiful autumn colors.

One of my favorite things about October weddings in Acadia National Park is the variety of landscapes available within a short drive. Couples can experience coastal views, mountain overlooks, evergreen forests, and vibrant fall foliage all in the same day.

A Private Acadian Boat Tours Experience

One of the most fun parts of Andrew and Katie's wedding day was their private charter with Acadian Boat Tours.

Rather than moving directly from the ceremony to the reception, they rented an entire boat for their family and friends and spent the afternoon exploring the waters surrounding Mount Desert Island.

Guests enjoyed appetizers and drinks while taking in views of Acadia from a completely different perspective. The two-hour tour gave everyone an opportunity to relax, mingle, and experience another side of coastal Maine together.

It was such a fun way to bridge the ceremony and reception while creating an experience their guests would never forget.

Beach Mountain Portraits During Peak Fall Color

After the boat tour, Andrew and Katie signed their marriage license before the three of us headed up for a little mountain hike to take some portraits.

Although we weren't chasing sunset that evening, the late-afternoon light was absolutely beautiful. Mid-October is one of the best times to experience fall foliage in Acadia National Park, and the mountainsides were filled with color.

The short hike gave Andrew and Katie another opportunity to spend time together away from the crowd and soak in the reality that they were finally married.

The combination of golden light, colorful leaves, and sweeping mountain views made it the perfect location for their wedding portraits.

Reception at Sweet Pea's in Bar Harbor

The celebration concluded at Sweet Pea's Cafe in Bar Harbor, where Andrew and Katie had rented the space for an intimate reception with family and friends.

Guests enjoyed cocktail hour before moving into dinner, heartfelt speeches, first dances, and dessert. After a day filled with hiking, exploring, and celebrating, it was the perfect way to gather everyone together and reflect on the memories they had created.

The reception felt warm, relaxed, and incredibly personal, exactly the atmosphere Andrew and Katie had envisioned from the beginning.
