Today we’re talking about the best places to elope in Scotland - aka, one of my favorite places in the world.
Scotland has become an incredibly special place to me. After my mom and I’s first visit in 2014, we found ourselves being more and more drawn back to the magic we felt in all of the different corners of the country. Towards the late 2010’s, it started to become a bit of a habit (oops 🤣). Sharing such a love for this place, and the intentional time these trips carved out for the two of us, we started to make it an annual journey - especially since traveling from the east coast of the US, really isn’t too bad! For almost the last decade, we’ve made a nearly annual trip over to this sacred place (with the occasional inclusion of Ireland, too!), exploring the many coastlines, highlands, small villages and more in our time there.
My job as an elopement photographer has taken me to some incredible places around the world through the last decade, in which I’ve seen couples share some of the best days of their lives while also sharing once in a lifetime travel experiences. Naturally, it’s become second nature for me to view most locations and my own travel experiences through the lens of what an elopement could be in that spot, and Scotland is no exception. With each trip spent exploring new areas of this beautiful country, I leave with an endless list of ideas and inspiration for what could be so many special elopement experiences. So I figured it was time that I finally brought some of those insights to you within a blog post, and ran through a list of what I believe to be some of the best locations to elope in Scotland.
Personally, I believe Scotland to be one of the best elopement locations in the world. Within a relatively small geographic area, you get dramatic mountains, moody coastlines, ancient stone circles, storybook villages, and historic cities that feel like stepping into another era. What makes it especially powerful for elopements is the variety. You can design an experience that feels wild and remote one day, and cozy and intimate the next, without ever leaving the country or even having to drive too far.

Mountain Elopement Locations in Scotland
Isle of Skye, Scotland
Isle of Skye is popular for a reason, and even though it is a common destination for tourists, it still might be my favorite place in Scotland. And while it’s listed under mountainous locations (because the mountains are epic!) it has a little bit of everything to offer when it comes to landscapes. The Isle of Skye feels like a fantasy landscape with jagged peaks, waterfalls spilling into the ocean, dramatic coastline, Caribbean blue beaches and mist that moves through valleys like a living thing. It’s quite a large island, and because of this, offers a lot of variety in landscapes, towns, activities and vibes - which makes it one of the best locations for a Scotland elopement.
Best time to elope on Isle of Skye
We personally plan our trips to Skye for the March - May timeframe, because it seems to be the best of all the worlds. Earlier in the season, you might have a little dusting of snow on the mountains, the highland gorse is blooming (smelling and looking fantastic), and crowds are minimal. However, Skye truly is beautiful all times of year. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to elope on Isle of Skye:
March - May: quieter roads, spring light, plants in bloom
September - October: moody weather, fewer tourists, cozy fall feel
Summer: long daylight, higher chance of sunnier days, but busy and lots of mosquitos

Isle of Skye is a popular place and with that, comes popular tourist destinations. And while many of those locations are beautiful for a reason and deserved to be visited, there are several lesser known regions + spots on the island that will be much more private + secluded. Leaning on my expertise, I can guide you to areas of the island that are just as beautiful + special, but much less trafficked, for an intimate elopement experience.

Where to Stay for your Isle of Skye Elopement
Isle of Skye is a massive island, so where to stay will be largely influenced by where you choose to spend your elopement day. However, some places to consider are:
Portree boutique hotels - centrally located + walkable through the village
Remote cottages for privacy - find a remote Airbnb overlooking the Atlantic
Luxury hotels - treat yourself with a stay at Kinloch Lodge or Skeabost Hotel

Adventure-loving couples who want a variety of dramatic, cinematic landscapes and don’t mind weather unpredictability.
Glencoe, Scotland
Glencoe is one of the most emotionally powerful landscapes in Scotland, and what most poeple think of when they imagine mountains in Scotland. Glencoe delivers epic scenery with minimal hiking, making it accessible yet wild. It’s also home to the tallest mountain in the UK - Ben Nevis!
If you love towering mountains, deep valleys, and rolling green hills - Glencoe might be the best place for you to elope in Scotland.
Best time to elope in GlenCoe
The sweet spot for when to elope in Glencoe is late spring or mid fall. From May-June, you’ll have green valleys, and beautiful spring weather, without the summer crowds or summer mosquito population quite yet. In the fall, you’ll experience stunning golden tones and misty mountain scenes, which can be just as beautiful. If you’re after a cozy, snowy-dusted, wood-stove burning type of experience, winter can also be extremely beautiful for a Glencoe elopement.

Quickly shifting mountain weather is almost a gauranteed experience here. But that ever changing, misty, moody weather will add to the landscape and the experience - don’t fight it! Head out early in the morning for soft light and a bit more privacy. And luckily for you, there isn’t a need for long hikes in Glencoe as the roadside viewpoints are incredible, so even if the weather is less than ideal, we can wait it out in the car with a hot cup of tea for things to pass. Talk about cozy!

For accomodations, stay somewhere like the Glencoe House if you’re after luxury, or at one of the remote hillside cottages if you want more of your own space. To get to Glencoe, you can either fly into Glasgow or Edinburgh, which are both about 2.5 hours away by car. Or fly into Inverness and explore Loch Ness along your drive!

Scottish Highlands
Scottish Highlands is the ultimate elopement playground, with vast, wild, and endlessly cinematic views nearly everywhere you look. While Glencoe, Isle of Skye and some of the other locations are all considered the Scottish Highlands, I felt the need to include the highlands as a general location in this list of best locations to elope in Scotland, just because there are so many little villages and areas in the region, and the highlands as a whole make for an incredible elopement location. In the highlands, you can design a multi-day adventure across mountains, lochs, castles, and coastlines.

Similarly to Isle of Skye + Glencoe, I’d recommend heading to the highlands in spring and fall for the best weather. From April - June, you’ll find lush green landscapes, plants blooming, minimal crowds + midgies. In the fall, you’ll have peak moodiness, fall colors, misty vibes and again, minimal crowds. Winter can be a stunning time as well for little dustings of snow and absolute solitude.

Eloping in the highlands is best experienced as a road trip. There are so many small villages, lochs, hikes, and places to experience throughout the highlands, that your best elopement will come through a well planned roadtrip through the mountain roads, with plenty of room to stop and explore along the way. Build in flexibility for weather, but rest assured that it moves quickly. Roadtripping through the highlands on your elopement will give you a mix of remote and easily accessible locations, all with the same incredibly dramatic scenery.

Inverness will be your best starting point for a Scottish Highlands elopement. You can fly into Inverness, or instead, into Glasgow or Edinburgh and either drive or take the train to Inverness. Once in Inverness, you’ll have the highlands at your finger tips!
There are a mix of boutique highland hotels like the Whispering Pine Lodge (highly recommend!) or luxury accommodations like Inverlochy Castle, or self catering Airbnbs depending on the experience you envision.

Epic multi-day adventure elopements, that can’t decide on one spot, and want to road trip + explore all of the diverse scenery the region has to offer.
Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond offers the perfect balance of accessibility and wild Scottish beauty. Loch Lomond is less of a dramatic, wild, wildnerness landcape, and more of a cozy, relaxing forested lake vibe. It’s the best Scotland elopement location if you’re looking for lochs, forests, and a little bit of mountains, all in one place without a bunch of travel logisitics.

The best time to elope at Loch Lomond will be May–September, when you have the best weather and optimal chance to enjoy the lake! Fall can also be beautiful with colorful foliage, or even winter if you want something more mystical and quiet, but on the cooler side.

With Loch Lomond, you can access private ceremony options via boat! Which again, is why it’s best explored in the warmer options. You can explore hiking, with stunning loch viewpoints to explore everything this region has to offer.

Travel logistics for a loch lomond elopement
The best way to get to Loch Lomond will be to fly into Glasgow Airport and drive an hour to Loch Lomond. From there, you can stay at a lakeside resorts like the Cameron House (fun fact - I’m a Cameron!), a boutique lodge like the Lodges on Loch Lomond, or at a cute woodland cabin airbnb.

Couples wanting quieter, lake focused scenery and beautiful landscapes without the logistics of too much travel.
Coastal Elopement Locations in Scotland
North Coast 500
North Coast of Scotland is one of the most remote and breathtaking coastal regions in Europe. It’s wild, empty, and incredibly cinematic, making it perfect for solitude and dramatic coastline imagery. The North Coast 500 (often referred to as the NC500) is a drive-able route of 500 miles along the northern coast of Scotland. It winds through several small villages, dramatic coastline, some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland and more. It’s far less trafficked than a lot of the popular places in Scotland, naturally due to it’s remote setting. But I promise you, it’s worth the journey!

The best time to elope on the NC500 is going to be April - June or September. These time frames will give you decent weather (maybe a bit iffy still in April) and beautiful light without the busier roads of summer.

This stretch of country is remote, and you can expect long drives between locations. For an elopement, it will be best to choose a section of the NC500 you want to experience for your elopement, and maybe spend the rest of the week completing the full journey! You’ll want to plan your overnight stops, fuel stops, and supplies carefully so that you have access to everything you need.

North coast 500 elopement travel logistics
You can either drive the NC500 clockwise or counterclockwise from Inverness. However, you’ll want to arrange for a car in Inverness to start your journey. We decided to go clockwise, heading first up to Lochcarron then through villages like Torridon, Gairloch, Ullapool, Lochinver, Durness, Thurso and Wick before heading down through Dornoch and back to Inverness. Along the way, you can stay in boutique inns, bed + breakfasts, or even wild camp if you’re really pulling for adventure!
A North coast 500 elopement is best for:
Couples that are after a true, wild adventure, featuring solitude and raw, untamed landscapes.
Oban
Oban is ideal for couples who want a blend of coastal charm + easy adventure access. It’s less remote than Skye or Harris, but still feels deeply connected to the sea and wilderness. It has cozy seaside town energy, but also is the base for the ferries to the other Inner Hebrides Islands. You can access mountain + water views right from town, take day trips or overnights to neighboring islands, and experience incredible seafood culture for celebratory dinners.
It’s one of the easiest places in Scotland to build a “soft adventure” elopement day without long, exhausting travel logistics.
Best time to elope in Oban
The best time to elope in Oban will be May to September to maximize the best ferry schedules and long daylight. In June + July specifcially, you’ll experience lush green landscapes and long golden light evenings, which means more time to explore!
October can be nice for quieter + moodier atmosphere, or even winter for a peaceful, cozy vibe, however be aware that there will be limited ferry options and daylight.
PRO TIP for an oban elopement
When eloping in Oban, you’ll want to build your timeline around ferry schedules if you plan on island hopping. Oban is especially good for couples who want flexibility without sacrificing scenery, and it typically has a bit more mild weather compared to some of the unpredictable weather that the highland locations can experience.

If you want a more adventurous version, Oban can easily become a multi-day island-hopping base.
Oban Elopement Travel logistics
Oban offers a mix of luxury boutique waterfront hotels, midrange guesthouses in Oban, as well as cute airbnb cottages just outside of town with sea views. You can also stay on one of the nearby islands for a bit more privacy and seclusion. However, if you’re staying in Oban, it’ll be best to be near the harbor to have walking access into town and the ferries.
To get to Oban, you’ll want to fly into Glasgow and either rent a car or take a train to make the 3 hour journey to Oban. The direct train along the coastline is especially beautiful! From Oban, you can connect via ferry to islands such as Mull, Coll, Tiree and more.

Couples who want island access without full remoteness, or for a multi-location elopement that mixes a blend of town, islands and the sea.
Isles of Lewis and Harris
Isle of Lewis and Harris is one of the most breathtaking and underrated elopement destinations in the entire UK. Technically one island, Lewis and Harris feel like two completely different worlds. Lewis is wild, ancient, and atmospheric, while Harris is soft, mountainous, and home to some of the most stunning beaches in Europe. What more could you want! If your want your elopement to feel completely removed from every day life, head to Lewis and Harris. The landscapes feel untouched, like they’ve been waiting thousands of years for you to arrive. You’ll find beaches that look tropical but feel wild, ancient history with standing stones older than Stonehenge, endless empty roads and moutnains that drop directly into the sea. It’s an incredibly emotionally grounded place to elope and sets the scene for a once in a lifetime kind of adventure.
Best Time to elope on Lewis + Harris
The best time to elope on the Isle of Lewis and Harris will be the warmer months, so that you can optimize best weather and ferry reliability - typically May through September. In June + July, you’ll have best chances at calmer seas and long daylight filling the sky. Come September, you’ll find it quieter, starting to have golden tones all around, and dramatic skies. If you decide to shoot for the winter months, you’ll find it very remote and with limited services, however it will be extremely atmospheric!
Pro Tip for Eloping on Lewis + Harris:
The weather on Lewis + Harris is highly unpredictable and wind and rain are part of the experience. You’ll want to stay flexible, but know that conditions change quickly across different parts of the island so if it’s terrible weather on one side of the island, we might be able to find clearings on the other side! Lewis + Harris has so much to offer, that if you remain flexible and curious, you’re gauranteed to have an incredible elopement experience, no mate the weather.

Isle of Lewis + Harris Elopement Travel Logistics
To get to Lewis + Harris, you’ll want to fly from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness to the town of Stornoway. If flying isn’t your thing, you can take a ferry from Ullapool which will take longer, but is stunning and scenic! You’ll need to have a car as public transporation is limited.
As for where to stay, Stornoway will be the easiest base, offering restuarntes, ammenties and access to things. However, you’ll find remote cottages in Harris that are ideal for privacy and beah access, along with traditional crofts that can provide a unique + authentic Hebridean experience.
An Elopement on the Isle of Lewis + Harris is best for:
Couples who want true solitude and isolation and an elopement that is landscape driven, deeply emotional + spiritual, and for those that love dramatic light, weather and scenery.
Orkney Islands
The Orkney Islands feels ancient, spiritual, and quietly powerful with its stone circles, sea cliffs, and landscapes that are shaped more by history than tourism. My time in Orkney was deeply impactful and interesting. I remember standing on the Yesnabey Cliffs, overlooking the Atlantic, and all I could think about was how incredible it would be to get married engulfed in a feeling like the one that the cliffs offered. With so much history and stories from the past all around, it feels incredibly grounding and mystical to be on the Orkney Islands.

The best time to elope in Orkney will be May through July for the best weather, long daylight, and access to most things. September can also be nice bringing a bit more solitude and atmospheric energy. You’ll want to steer clear of winter as it brings limited daylight and intense winds.

One of the most special things about Orkney is it’s numerous historical and prehistoric places. Incorporate historical sites for unique storytelling and to feel like you can really get a sense for the past that Orkney has had.

Orkney Island Elopement Travel logistics:
To get to the Orkney Islands, you’ll want to either fly from Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Inverness. Or alternatively, you can take a ferry from mainland Scotland. During my travels to the Orkney Islands, we took the ferry from the most northeastern corner of mainland Scotland and it was a beautiful, scenic experience arriving to the islands by boat!
For accommodations, Kirkwall will offer a central location. We stayed at the Kirkwall Hotel and had a great experience, however there are several coastal cottages with sea views that could be lovely for an elopement experience!

Couples who want solitude, history, and a deeply meaningful elopement experience. It’s easy to feel emotionally grounded and connect to Orkney, which will add a special level of depth to your elopement day.
Urban Elopement Locations in Scotland
Edinburgh
Truth be told, for me personally, the magic of Scotland is in the nature, outdoors and scenery it has to offer. However, if urban is more your style, Edinburgh does blend historic city romance with dramatic natural viewpoints within minutes and can make for a great location for your Scotland elopement! It offers architecture, culture, and nature in one compact, walkable city.

Edinburgh can work great for an elopement year around! You’ll find yourself with the best weather from May–September, less crowds and equally magical in the shoulder months, or elope in December for a magical Christmas atmosphere complete with the Edinburgh Christmas Markets!

Eloping in Edinburgh can bring a mix of urban + green landscapes. If you’re after a view at Arthurs Seat, head there first thing for minimal crowds. For dining and activities in the city, you’ll want to make reservations in advance for the best experience!

You can fly directly into Edinburgh from most major airports, and it also has excellent train access if you’re coming from another area of Scotland or the UK. Stay in luxury hotels in Old Town, boutique suites in historic buildings, or at a cozy airbnb overlooking the Edinburgh Castle!

Planning your Scotland Elopement
How to Legally Elope in Scotland
One of the reasons so many couples choose to elope in Scotland is because it’s one of the easiest places in Europe for international couples to legally get married. Scotland also allows legally recognized humanist ceremonies, which means you can exchange vows almost anywhere - from dramatic cliffs on the Isle of Skye to a quiet glen in the Highlands.
To legally elope in Scotland, you’ll need to submit marriage paperwork to the local registrar district where your ceremony will take place. This includes marriage notice forms, passports, birth certificates, and any additional required documents depending on your situation. You should plan to submit paperwork at least 10-12 weeks before your elopement date to allow plenty of processing time.

One of the best parts about getting married in Scotland is the flexibility. Unlike some countries that restrict weddings to licensed venues, Scotland allows outdoor ceremonies in many incredible natural locations. If your priority is creating an experience-focused elopement, I always recommend investing most heavily in more time in fewer locations, comfortable accommodations, activities you genuinely love and a photography experience that helps the day feel relaxed and intentional.

One of the best things about eloping in Scotland is that your wedding day can feel like an actual adventure instead of a packed schedule of formal events. Scotland is perfect for couples who want to slow down, explore together, and build meaningful experiences into their day.
